The Moment Before You Hit “Post”

In a recent research session, a founder showed me their app prototype. It was clean, thoughtful, and clearly the result of many late nights. When I asked where they planned to share it first, they paused. Not the thoughtful, reflective pause I love as a researcher—but the tight kind. The kind where someone is weighing exposure against progress.

They eventually said, almost apologetically, “I’m not sure. Reddit feels risky. Twitter feels loud. Friends feel… biased.”

That moment has been sticking with me as I’ve followed conversations across the product and research community this week. On the surface, people are asking tactical questions: What’s the first marketing step? Where do I get my first users? Should I lurk or post? But underneath, I hear something else. A quieter tension about being seen too early, in the wrong place, by the wrong people—and not knowing how much that visibility will cost.

As a researcher, I’ve sat with hundreds of people at the edge of action. As a human, I recognize that feeling. The week before anyone cares is not empty. It’s full of social risk, invisible audiences, and the fear that the first reaction might define the product—or you—before you’ve had a chance to learn.

Early Traction Is a Social Act, Not a Growth Hack

We often talk about “getting your first users” as if it’s a mechanical problem. Pick a channel. Craft a message. Measure the response. But the conversations I’m seeing tell a different story. Early traction is fundamentally social. It’s about who you’re willing to talk to, where, and under what conditions.

From a behavioral perspective, this makes sense. Humans are deeply attuned to social evaluation, especially in ambiguous situations. Psychologists call this evaluation apprehension—the anxiety that arises when we expect to be judged. It’s heightened when:

  • The outcome matters personally
  • The rules are unclear
  • The audience feels permanent or public

Early product sharing hits all three.

One founder asked whether it’s better to “lurk in communities or post early and get roasted.” That’s not a marketing question. That’s a question about psychological safety. In research terms, they’re asking where learning can happen without triggering defensiveness or shutdown.

There’s data to back this up. A 2023 survey by Indie Hackers found that over 60% of founders got their first 10 users through direct, personal outreach—DMs, emails, or small communities—rather than public launches or ads. Not because those channels scale, but because they contain the social risk.

Early traction isn’t about reach. It’s about survivable feedback.

The Invisible Feedback Loop of Communities

Another thread that caught my attention asked whether Reddit has ever quietly helped—or hurt—a product without the team noticing. As someone who studies feedback systems, this question made me lean forward.

Communities like Reddit operate on what I think of as ambient influence. Conversations don’t need to go viral to shape perception. A single thoughtful comment in a niche subreddit can resurface months later when someone searches for alternatives. A skeptical thread can quietly become the default narrative.

What’s tricky is that this feedback is often:

  • Unattributed: No one tags the company
  • Asynchronous: It unfolds over time
  • Contextual: Meaning shifts based on who’s reading and why

In user research, we know that people are more honest when they don’t feel observed. That’s why diary studies and unmoderated tests can be so revealing. Reddit functions similarly. It’s a space where users talk about products, not to them.

A concrete example: A B2C finance app I worked with saw steady signups but stagnant activation. Traditional channels showed nothing alarming. It wasn’t until we traced organic search traffic back to a months-old Reddit thread that we understood the hesitation. Users weren’t confused about features—they were uncertain about trust. One early comment questioning data privacy had become the emotional anchor for dozens of lurkers.

According to Pew Research, 38% of U.S. adults say they regularly read online forums or discussion boards to evaluate products, even if they never post. That’s a lot of silent observers.

The lesson isn’t “monitor everything.” That’s neither realistic nor healthy. It’s recognizing that not all feedback arrives as a notification. Some of it lives in the spaces between metrics.

Testers, Customers, and the Emotional Cost of Asking

Several posts this week blurred the line between finding testers, domain experts, and paying customers. That blur is telling.

When someone asks, “How did you get your first customers?” what they often mean is, How did you ask without feeling like you were imposing? Especially for side projects, the request carries emotional weight. You’re not just asking for time or money. You’re asking someone to care about something that already carries your frustration, hope, and identity.

In qualitative research, we’re trained to separate the artifact from the person. The prototype is not you. The feedback is not a verdict. But when you’re the builder, that separation is hard to maintain.

I’ve noticed that teams who navigate this well tend to do three things early:

  1. They name the role clearly
    “I’m looking for testers, not validation.” This sets expectations and reduces performative praise.

  2. They choose contexts that match the ask
    Domain experts in domain spaces. Early adopters in problem-focused communities—not generic startup forums.

  3. They close the loop visibly
    Even a short follow-up—Here’s what changed because of your input—builds trust and makes future asks easier.

This isn’t about politeness. It’s about respecting cognitive and emotional labor. Research shows that people are more willing to give feedback when they believe it will lead to observable change. A Nielsen Norman Group study found that participants were 2x more likely to engage in follow-up sessions when they saw evidence their input mattered.

When Progress Feels Lonely (and Why That Matters)

One of the quieter threads this week asked how to start something without feeling “lonely af.” It might seem tangential, but I think it’s central.

Loneliness isn’t just an emotional state—it’s a cognitive one. When we work in isolation, our judgment narrows. We either overcorrect based on limited feedback or stall waiting for perfect certainty. Neither is great for early products.

In research, we rely on sensemaking together. We debrief after sessions not just to share insights, but to calibrate our reactions. Did you notice that hesitation? Am I over-indexing on that comment? That social processing is part of rigor.

Founders and solo builders rarely get that by default.

What I’ve seen help isn’t necessarily finding a co-founder right away, but creating lightweight accountability structures:

  • Small peer groups reviewing work-in-progress
  • Public-but-bounded sharing (weekly build logs in a niche Slack)
  • Explicit “thinking partners” who aren’t users or investors

These spaces don’t eliminate loneliness, but they prevent it from distorting decision-making. They give you a place to metabolize feedback before it hardens into self-doubt or overconfidence.

What I’m Taking Away From These Conversations

If I zoom out from the individual posts, a pattern emerges. People aren’t stuck because they don’t know what to do. They’re stuck because the first steps ask them to manage visibility, vulnerability, and uncertainty all at once.

So here’s the practical wisdom I’d offer—not as a checklist, but as orientation:

  • Choose learning over exposure for your first steps. Private conversations beat public spectacle when stakes are high.
  • Pay attention to quiet signals—pauses, hesitations, recurring phrases in forums. They often matter more than likes or signups.
  • Design your feedback loops with the same care you design your product. Who’s invited? What’s safe to say? What happens next?
  • Don’t confuse loneliness with independence. Progress is faster—and kinder—when thinking is shared.

The goal of early traction isn’t to be impressive. It’s to stay curious long enough to learn.

Ending Where We Began

I keep thinking about that founder and their pause. What they needed in that moment wasn’t a channel strategy. It was reassurance that learning doesn’t require self-exposure to be valid.

In user research, we honor small samples when they’re thoughtfully chosen. We trust deep conversations when they’re grounded in real context. Early products deserve the same respect.

The week before anyone cares is not a void to be rushed through. It’s a formative space where habits, narratives, and relationships take shape. How you move through it—who you talk to, how you listen, what you protect—will echo long after the numbers start to move.

And maybe that’s the deeper insight these conversations are circling: before growth, before customers, before traction, there’s a very human question at the center of building.
